Estrella: Can you please state your name and what you do in the band?
Will: My name is William Charles Anderson and I am the lead singer, guitarist and pianist for the band Parachute.
Estrella: How did it come about that the bands name changed from Sparky’s Flaw to Parachute?
Will: Parachute was the name that we all stumbled upon a while back as something we all really liked. We thought of Sparky’s Flaw when we were 15 years old and it was always something we all kind of wanted to change but never really got around to it. Finally it came down to when we were getting ready to put out our first record and a lot of things were happening.
Estrella: Did you guys change your name before you got signed to Island Records?
Will: No it was after and the label didn’t even know we were going to do it. We had informed them very suddenly that we wanted to change our name and they were fine with it. We definitely wanted to before we got signed.
Estrella: I know you guys have been around for 6+ years and when putting together your debut full length album Losing Sleep how much of the material was from previous EP’s and how much was created specifically for the album?
Will: I would say 3 songs were from previous EP’s, they were ones we recorded before we thought about making a full length record. Probably 7 out of 10 songs are brand new, written for this records and came about after we started making it. It’s a mix of old and new stuff, but for the most part it is new stuff.
Estrella: Did you guys have stuff you wrote that did not make it on the album?
Will: We have plenty, we just put out a deluxe addition and we added a couple of songs that did not make the record. One of the songs is a song called “Losing Sleep” which is actually the title of the album so it is cool to let people hear the song that the album is named after. It was probably one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written but unfortunately it didn’t make sense to put it on the main release so it was cool to get that out and let people hear it.
Estrella: You guys seem to be touring non-stop this year, what are some different things you are looking forward too when you are on tour with Secondhand Serenade and then the Kelly Clarkson tour?
Will: It’s fun to play different size rooms so with Kelly it is bigger arenas and amphitheaters. With Secondhand Serenade we are playing kind of smaller more theater and club kind of things. I’m looking forward to shaping the set and shaping the live show to fit each different venue. With Secondhand Seranade I’m looking forward to meeting everybody and hanging out and with Kelly we get to play for a lot of people and it’s the bigger shows. It’s fun to get a taste of each different phase and hopefully eventually it will get to where we are just doing big stuff all the time but for now it is definitely fun to do the smaller stuff. It is a totally different feel and it’s a lot of fun.
Estrella: Do you think there will be a headline tour after the Kelly Clarkson tour?
Will: Hopefully in the spring we will do the headline tour and come back to Chicago, and do the places that we know we can do well. So hopefully it will be a couple of weeks by ourselves than get back on the road with somebody. It is always fun to do your own shows, you can play longer and really dial it in for the fans that are there to see you.
Estrella: You are touring with The Script right now, any interesting tour stories?
Will: Well today our merch guy was driving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis and she (van) apparently while in the middle of driving, lost the bumper or fender to her trailer. One second he’s looking forward, the next second he is looking back and there was no more fender to the car. We were worried it was going to cause an accident. Another weird tour story was when tour manager went to get our rental car at the airport, he was taking forever and we finally found out that the shuttle bus he was in had gotten rear-ended from behind. It’s been a weird car kind of past couple of days. The tour has been good, it has just been a lot of driving and flying, and very little sleep which is a good thing because we would rather be working.
Estrella: Do you guys mainly fly or drive to each city?
Will: It depends, we did 4 mornings of the flights the past 4 days but now we are driving for a couple of days. It’s just a matter of where we have to be, sometimes it is literally impossible to drive somewhere sometimes.
Estrella: When you are not touring what do you usually do for down time back at home?
Will: Lots of sleeping and me personally, I like to read a lot and catch up on my TV shows that are saved on my TV.
Estrella: What shows do you watch?
Will: Felicity, One Tree Hill….No more like Lost, 24, Hero’s, etc.
Estrella: If you weren’t in this band do you think that you’d be playing the same style of music if you were in another one?
Will: Yeah, I think this is definitely the kind of music we all enjoy playing and it’s fun to play it now and hopefully it will evolve and keep growing. This is definitely something all of us want to do and we wouldn’t be playing this kind of music if it wasn’t the music we want to be playing. I would love at some point to do an Earth, Wind, and Fire record with all of us, just a really funky horn-driven record. I’m sure some of the other guys want to do indie-rock, we all have different styles of music we like to play but this is our favorite for sure.
Estrella: Is there any song that you never get sick of hearing?
Will: Uh, that’s a great question. “Train In The Distance” by Paul Simon is one that I will never ever in my lifetime get sick of, it is a great tune.
Estrella: What is one of your favorite lines in one of your songs?
Will: In our song “Losing Sleep” there is a line, ‘I might be blind but I can hear, by the sound of things I’m losing sleep for all the right reasons.’ that’s one of my favorite lyrics.
Estrella: What is something you have always wanted to do but have not done yet?
Will: Skydive, so hopefully we can do it soon considering our name is Parachute, but I’ve always wanted to do it so hopefully soon, cross my fingers.
Estrella: If you could see any band or artist perform any song live what would it be and why?
Will: I would love to see U2 perform ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ I haven’t gotten to see them yet but hopefully at some point in the near future I will.
Estrella: Any final comments?
Will: Just come out and see us at the shows and get the new album Losing Sleep the deluxe edition, check it out.
