This fall, The Gay Blades will release their debut full-length album, Ghosts, on their imprint, 4Never Records, via Triple Crown Records. They will precede their full-length with a digital 7” release through RCRD LBL (Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Santogold) this summer. Catch them soon as they take their T Rex/Bill Murray inspired live show on the road as part of their “Touring the Dustbowl and Back” tour with dates into August.
“If Freddie Mercury sang for Death From Above 1979, these guys would open the show.” – CMJ
The Gay Blades are a two piece from New York City and play an acerbic brand of Trash Pop. What is Trash Pop, you ask? Trash pop is what happens when two keenly observant wannabe hipsters write and record songs the same pair couldn’t possibly pull off live, and make up for their missing bass player with consistent TNT like performances and a heaping spoonful of swagger. Clark Westfield plays the guitar and Puppy Mills plays the drums. They met when volunteering in a traveling sideshow while still in college, Clark juggling and Puppy taking tickets. Afterwards, back in NYC, they formed The Gay Blades.
They have been called “retro-trangressors” by the Village Voice and after first listen to Ghosts, with its twelve eccentric and trashy pop songs, including two “en-dance-d” bonus remixes, you’ll see why. From the stand out track and first single, “O Shot” (showcasing drummer Puppy Mills’ glamorous and propulsive drums) to “Why Can’t I Grow A Beard?“ (where Clark Westfield takes cues from his idol, Brian Wilson, becoming the recluse he knows he never could be), The Gay Blades grab your attention and keep it.
The band was featured in Alternative Press’ Unsigned Bands to Watch column earlier this year, as well as NYC Tastemaker ‘zine and blog, The Deli, as January 2008’s Artist of the Month and hailing the duo as one of the Top Bands in NYC.
