LUDO SIDE PROJECT : THE NEW HEATHERS – ANNOUNCES EP & TOUR DATES

There’s been quite a bit of news out of the LUDO camp lately. The St. Louis band whose 2008 major-label debut, You’re Awful, I Love You, sold over 100,000 copies (thanks to non-stop touring) was rather quiet the first half of 2009 but have emerged with all sorts of announcements. They’re re-releasing their first two albums on their own label September 29th, they’re playing nine shows this fall where they’ll be performing their 2005 rock opera Broken Bride in its entirety, and they’ve begun work on their next album for Island Records with producer Matt Wallace.

But that’s not all Ludo was working on in the first half of the year. They’ve announced the formation of the side-project THE NEW HEATHERS. “It all just kind of worked out,” says Ludo guitarist and Heathers’ frontman Tim Ferrell. “I was writing a lot of songs that didn’t really fit for Ludo. We finally had some time off and our singer, Andrew, wanted to spend some time at home before we put out the next Ludo album. Fortunately for me, the other guys were anxious to record and play some shows as well.” And so 3/4 of Ludo – singer / guitarist Tim Ferrell, keyboardist Tim Convy, and drummer Matt Palermo entered the studio and became The New Heathers.

Why “The New Heathers“? When the trio was still unnamed, Convy came across an article about Wynona Ryder declaring that there was a sequel in the works to her 80’s teen dark comedy Heathers. Convy says, “I’m a big fan of that movie, so I kept looking for details. As it turns out, every few years Wynona declares they’re making a sequel, but no one else involved with the film knows what she’s talking about, and no one’s actually planning to make the sequel…ever!” Convy brought the name to his bandmates and within days Ferrell came across “The New Heathers” in the book he was reading at the time, Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums. They took it as a sign.

The Fuel, The Fire, The Spark is available at digital retailers now and the physical release hits stores October 13th. The New Heathers will headline their first shows across the U.S. this fall in between Ludo dates starting October 18th is Allston, MA.

BLACK NUMBERS TO RELEASE P.J. BOND’S FULL LENGTH

Black Numbers is pleased to announce that it will release You Didn’t Know I Was Alphabetical, the latest full-length from New Brunswick, NJ native and ex-Outsmarting Simon front man PJ Bond.

The album, which will be released November 10th on both vinyl and CD formats, is now up for pre-order from the label. Black Numbers will press 300 copies of the LP (100 white, 200 blue), as well as a short run (200) of hand-screened CDs with liner notes personally written by PJ. No two of these limited edition discs are alike. There is an “official” CD version of You Didn’t Know I Was Alphabetical as well. To grab a copy (or all three), go here.

Beside Outsmarting Simon, Bond has also been a member of The Color Fred, Charlotte Sometimes, Marigold and Communipaw (with brother, Brian Bond). In comparison to previous endeavors, Alphabetical is decidedly more organic, homespun affair – a heartfelt slice of creaky, back porch Americana tossed against a perfectly catchy pop backdrop. Still, the record has a little bit of everything, from rustic, uptempo alt-country rockers to haunting, melancholy acoustic offerings and sweetly infectious indie numbers. For fans of Rocky Votolato, Neutral Milk Hotel, Whiskeytown and Elliott Smith.

Listen to “You, Too” (free mp3)

On a related note, Bond has given up his permanent residence, dedicating a year of his life to living on the road, bunking with friends, family, fans and even strangers, and playing as many shows in between. He chronicles his nomadic adventures on his blog, Year Of A Thousand Roommates. Check it out!
There will be extensive touring of the East Coast and Midwest in November. Before that though, Bond will travel to the UK for two weeks of shows beginning on October 2nd.

Image Entertainment, Inc. will release THE STARTING LINE’S first-ever live concert CD, film and documentary DVD titled SOMEBODY’S GONNA MISS US November 10 on a 2-disc set. The group will throw an official release party on Monday, November 9 at the World Café in Philadelphia (3025 Walnut Street, 8:00pm). For the event, THE STARTING LINE will screen portions of the DVD and fans can expect live performances from the band’s latest projects including Person L (Kenny Vasoli), Cheap Seats (Tom Gyskiewicz) and The Traded Series (Mike Golla).

The hour-long documentary DVD chronicles THE STARTING LINE during their preparation for and journey on their 2008 U.S. tour which culminates in their thunderous and heartfelt Bamboozle performance on May 4. Through intimate and honest interviews with the band, friends and family fans will get a glimpse into the inner workings of the group which after eight years together decided to take a hiatus in 2008 to pursue other projects. The full-length concert DVD and live CD features the band’s stunning performance in their hometown of Philadelphia at the Electric Factory on April 18, 2008. The live CD and DVD boasts 18 live songs and performances including fan favorites “Direction,” Island,” “Best of Me,” “Bedroom Talk,” “Something Left to Give” and many more; see the full track list of live performances below.
